Can you burn pellets in an eco-pea coal stove?

The upcoming heating period 2022/2023 seems to be one of the most difficult for many households in many years. High prices of coal, eco-pea coal, pellets and other solid fuels mean that users of central heating boilers are looking for savings. Then the question arises whether it is possible to burn pellets in an eco-pea coal stove? Be sure to check out our today's article!

What is the difference between eco-pea coal and pellets?

Eco-pea coal is produced from hard or brown coal with a high calorific value (above 24 MJ/kg). This coal is distinguished by low content of sulfur, water and low sinterability. Thus, as a result of the combustion of eco-pea coal, smaller amounts of ash and sulfur oxides are generated (compared to the combustion of traditional coal).

Pellet, in turn, has the form of granules and is produced from biomass, i.e. wood and plant waste. Interestingly, pellets are produced in various types and degrees of combustion, thanks to which it is easy to adapt the product to a specific furnace and needs. The calorific value of pellets is much lower than eco-pea coal. Wood pellets reach values of 15 - 18 MJ/kg, and wheat straw pellets approx. 16 MJ/kg. Despite this, pellets are still classified as high-calorie fuels.

Eco-pea coal or pellets - what to burn in the stove?

Due to the fact that the prices of both these fuels are very close to each other, other factors speak for the choice of a specific one. First of all, pellet is a much cleaner fuel, its combustion generates less ash and it is easier to keep the boiler room clean. In addition, the ash produced as a result of burning pellets can be reused as a garden fertiliser, while the ash from eco-pea coal is only suitable for throwing away (recycling).

If we value ecology, pellets should also attract our attention more. We must remember that it is created in the wood production process as a by-product. In turn, eco-pea coal comes directly from hard coal mines.

Despite so many benefits of using pellets, eco-pea coal has one very big advantage - higher calorific value. This means that eco-pea coal will give us more heat from the same amount of fuel than pellets.

Can you burn pellets in an eco-pea coal stove?

Publicly available opinions of specialists confirm the fact that you can burn pellets in an eco-pea coal stove. However, this requires some modifications and adaptation of the boiler to burn a different type of fuel.

It should be remembered that both boilers for eco-pea coal and pellet boilers have a slightly different construction and combustion of a different fuel than for which they have been adapted may lead to a decrease in thermal efficiency, and in the worst case, to the failure of the furnace. For this reason, the best solution is to use the fuel for which the boiler was designed.

The offer of eco-pea coal boilers

Burning with pellets in an eco-pea coal stove - how to do it?

In order to be able to burn pellets in an eco-pea coal stove without fear and with maximum efficiency, some structural modifications must be made.

One of the risks is the risk of embers returning to the hopper and feeder. For this reason, you should invest in a simple system called a "fireman". It is nothing more than a container with water placed on the feeder pipe, which will extinguish the flame in an emergency. In addition, the furnace controller should have the function of withdrawing fire from the feeder.

Another threat resulting from the combustion of pellets in the eco-pea coal boiler is tarring of the boiler in the support mode. This process means evaporation of tar from pellets and its deposition on the walls of the furnace - after the burner is turned off. To prevent this phenomenon, it is recommended to completely resign from the function of maintaining embers, and if necessary, turn off the furnace completely and light the pellets again.

Conclusions

In conclusion, solid fuel is a popular choice for many households, especially during periods of high prices for other energy sources. Eco-pea coal and pellets are two different options, with different features and benefits. Eco-pea coal is characterized by a higher calorific value, which translates into greater thermal efficiency, but pellets have an advantage in terms of cleanliness, ecology and the possibility of reusing ash.

Remember, however, that if you have a stove adapted to burn eco-pea coal, modifications and adjustments to the boiler are necessary if you want to burn pellets. Regardless of your choice, it is important to maintain regular inspection and maintenance of your furnace to ensure its efficiency and safety. Consult a specialist who will help you make the right decision and make the necessary changes to your furnace.
